Guitarrón Chileno: A Musical Treasure of Chile
The Guitarrón Chileno (literally: “large Chilean guitar”) is a plucked string instrument from Chile, featuring 25 or 24 strings. Its origins date back to the 16th century. Although its name suggests a derivation from the guitar, it is more closely linked to the vihuela of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Modern Guitarrón Chileno instruments use metal frets and geared tuning machines, similar to modern guitars.
Initially, this instrument was primarily used in rural areas to accompany the traditional Chilean genre of singing poetry known as “Canto a lo Poeta.” With the revival of “world music” and traditional folk forms, the Guitarrón Chileno has gained increased interest in urban and contemporary musical settings.

The Guitarrón Chileno embraces two main thematic groups: Canto a lo Divino (Singing to the Divine) and Canto a lo Humano (Singing to the Human). It is also used to perform other musical forms like cuecas, tonadas, valses, and polkas. The traditional playing method involves plucking the strings with the fingertips and nails of the right hand, while the left hand frets the strings on the fingerboard, similar to the guitar.
